Social media has changed the way Americans consume both entertainment and information. Pranav Malhotra, assistant professor in the University of Michigan’s Department of Communication and Media, talked with Stateside about the facts behind some of our social media fears, and about what the future of social media use might look like. 

Transnational Information Studies Syllabus

This syllabus, co-authored with Rachel Kuo, Rachel Moran, and Sarah Nguyễn, aims to understand relations of power related to where and how information emerges and circulates. Grounded in empirical examples, this syllabus argues that in order to understand politics and information, we must first attend to historical and contemporary formations of power and state violence, including imperialism, colonialism, and militarism and how these legacies impact current modalities of technological and institutional governance.

The Social Dilemma Fails to Tackle the Real Issues in Tech

The Social Dilemma plays up well-worn dystopian narratives surrounding technology, with a sprinkling of early utopian views, and omits the voices of critical researchers who have been sounding the alarm on Silicon Valley for a long time.
